EXHIBITIONS AND PROJECTS

BACKYARD INDEX 2025

A study of the microcosm of the backyard, growth cycles, and the pursuit of quiet coexistence with the environment. The project consists of sculptures by me and audio texts by Emilia Karjula about backyard activities. The sculptures are made from matter found in the local environment and objects in various stages of decay and re-formation.

SCULPTURE AS A CARBON STORAGE 2023 –

Sculpture as a Carbon Storage is an on-going collective art project produced and curated by me. It studies the possibilities to turn waste wood back into living forest by cultivating discarded material into resources and guiding them into nature preservation work. Approximately 60 Finnish artists have taken part in the project so far.

SCENES 2019

Scenes was a project studying spirituality and artistic process in a religious context. The exhibition was produced and curated by me in the Turku Cathedral – a medieval basilica, considered to be the most important religious building in Finland. The artworks were complimented with essays by art historian Riikka Niemelä and philosopher Antony Fredrikson.

SCULPTURES 2010 – 2020

Selection of works. I continued to use a lot of lighting systems as part of my sculptures. It was interesting to me to see how light was guiding our perception but also interfering and hiding things. The importance of materiality became more important.

BLACK RUBBER SCULPTURES 2005 – 2014

I started to work with industrial rubber because of its nature to misbehave. It is hard to work with, so you must proceed on its terms. Elastic materials tend to preserve energy in their bodies by stretching, bending or hanging and this material tension was very poetic to me.  It encapsulated the idea of material dialogue, which became a leading philosophy of my work.

SCULPTURES 2000 – 2010

Selected work from this era. I was very interested in the idea of piercing through surfaces to see hidden structures, construction – and demolition sites, exosceletal systems, horror and scifi and how memories mutate and change.
